Three checks, three different questions

A referral reward is not permission to ignore the account or promotion rules. Start with these checks:

  1. Qualification: has the required external net funding arrived within the applicable window?
  2. Retention: what must remain in Wealthsimple after the reward is applied?
  3. Availability: which cash can the account actually transfer or withdraw now?

The standard referral terms distinguish qualifying funding from a 180-day hold on the bonus. They do not describe that hold as a blanket lock on every original deposit. A separate offer may have its own funding-retention conditions. Read every promotion you joined before acting. Source: current base referral terms.

If your account already has a referrer, keep that relationship. You do not need a different code or another profile to work through these checks.

Net funding: why a deposit receipt is not the whole calculation

The current base offer uses at least $100 CAD in qualifying external net funding, received within its 30-day funding period. Withdrawals and transferred margin debt affect that calculation; internal transfers and promotional credits are not new external funding. Read the qualifying-funding definition.

These simplified examples show arithmetic only. They assume the incoming money is otherwise eligible and arrives on time; they do not certify an account.

Fictional examples before relying on qualification
ActivitySimple calculationWhat to check
$100 external deposit, $40 withdrawn$100 − $40 = $60 netThe amount is below $100; do not assume the initial deposit is enough.
$160 external deposit, $40 withdrawn$160 − $40 = $120 netThe arithmetic reaches $100; all other conditions still matter.
$80 external deposit, $25 promotional credit$80 external fundingThe credit does not turn $80 into $105 of qualifying funding.

Pending, reversed or differently classified transactions need an account-specific answer. Ask support how the actual entries count before planning around a reward.

A timeline for keeping the bonus

Keep a short record of the milestones instead of treating signup, funding and payout as one event:

  1. Referral established: save the relevant date and the applicable promotion.
  2. Funding received: distinguish a transfer request from completed funding.
  3. Reward applied: record the payment date from your activity history.
  4. Retention checked: review the hold before making a withdrawal or closing an account.

The base terms measure 180 days from the day the bonus is applied and permit recovery if it is not retained. This concerns the reward, with account and other promotion rules still applying. Source: Hold Period.

Ask Wealthsimple to confirm the relevant end date if it affects a planned transaction. Do not rely on an old forum comment, an estimated calendar date or a withdrawal that someone else says worked.

Available cash is separate from promotion compliance

A total balance can include money you cannot withdraw yet. Wealthsimple lists recent deposits, unsettled sale proceeds and reserved funds among reasons available cash may be lower. Its general withdrawal guide provides account-specific timelines; they are not an instant-payment promise. Source: withdrawing funds.

For an external bank transfer, review the source account, destination and amount in the official app. Chequing withdrawals to a linked bank account typically complete in 1–3 business days. Different methods have different limits, timing or fees. Source: Chequing withdrawal methods.

Passing the app’s cash-availability check does not confirm that a referral or another promotion will remain eligible afterward. Review both before submitting.

Check TFSA room before withdrawing and putting money back

A small referral reward is not a reason to overlook registered-account rules. For a TFSA, CRA says a withdrawal is added back to contribution room on January 1 of the following calendar year. A same-year contribution requires sufficient unused room. Source: CRA contribution-room guidance.

For example, imagine someone with no unused room withdraws $100 from a TFSA in October. They should not assume that withdrawal creates $100 of room to contribute again in November. Check personal records across all TFSAs, rather than only one account balance.

Moving money internally also needs the right account treatment. Review Wealthsimple’s transfer restrictions before choosing a destination. RRSP, FHSA and other registered accounts have different rules; obtain advice for your situation.

A practical checklist before moving money

  • Find the promotion that actually applies to your referral date.
  • Separate external deposits, withdrawals, internal moves and credits in your records.
  • Check the reward’s application date and any overlapping offer.
  • Review available cash and the destination account’s restrictions.
  • Ask support about unclear entries before withdrawing or closing an account.

A useful question is: “Will this specific transaction affect my qualifying funding, bonus retention or another active offer?” Share transaction details only through official support. This publisher cannot inspect your balance, release funds or approve an exception.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Is my entire deposit locked for 180 days?

The base referral hold concerns the bonus. Review separate account and promotion restrictions before assuming the rest can be moved freely.

Can a withdrawal before qualification matter?

Yes. Use net funding, not just the largest deposit receipt. The examples above show why subtracting a withdrawal can change the result.

Does an available withdrawal button mean I can keep the reward?

No. Cash availability and promotion compliance answer different questions. An enabled control is not an account-specific eligibility decision.

Can I move money to another Wealthsimple account?

Check the supported source and destination first. An internal move is not fresh external funding and may have registered-account implications.

Should I close the account as soon as the bonus arrives?

Check all outstanding conditions first. Closing an account should not be treated as a way around retention or another offer’s requirements.

What to do next

Before moving money, separate the deposit calculation, the amount available to withdraw and the bonus-retention rule. Review every promotion attached to the account and any registered-account consequences. An enabled withdrawal button alone does not resolve those checks.
