A one-way referral is different from referring each other
The standard promotion terms prohibit cross-referrals: the referrer and referee cannot refer each other. They require an eligible new client and a qualifying existing referrer. They also limit the referee to one bonus in that role.
Think A → B, rather than A → B and B → A. Being married does not remove those conditions. Neither does using different email addresses. If both partners already use Wealthsimple, opening another product does not itself establish that either person is a new client.
Before involving money, write down who is referring whom, whether either person has registered before and whether a referral is already attached. If a spouse is only a secondary holder today, ask support how that history affects their eligibility; do not assume the answer.
A joint account does not create two referral bonuses
For an RESP, Spousal RRSP or joint promotional account, the referral terms’ multiple-holder section assigns qualifying registration and its bonus to the registered primary holder. Joining as secondary holder does not earn another bonus through that registration. Bonus recipients also need a Chequing account where they are primary owner.
| Arrangement | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Personal referral | A relationship between a referrer and eligible new client. | Attribution, account history and promotion conditions. |
| Joint Chequing | Both users can deposit, withdraw and see transactions. | Who is primary for the promotion. |
| Household feature | Shared financial visibility and client-status benefits, without merging accounts. | Household setup and any separate offer invitation. |
Sources: joint Chequing permissions and household feature. A household does not let one partner move money from the other’s individual accounts.
Two hypothetical family examples
Maya already uses Wealthsimple; Alex has never registered
Maya wants to refer Alex, her spouse. First they confirm Maya qualifies as referrer and Alex qualifies as a new client. Alex uses Maya’s link, checks attribution and follows the funding requirements. If they later create a joint account, they still check which person is primary; sharing the account does not multiply that referral.
Sam and Noor both want to join
Neither should assume that two new profiles can refer each other. If Sam joins first and later wants to refer Noor, Sam must meet the existing-referrer requirements when Noor funds. An account’s mere existence is insufficient. If their planned first account is joint, support can clarify registration and primary-holder history before they proceed.
Confirm the referrer before relying on a reward
Wealthsimple’s confirmation instructions explain the gift icon, Invite friends and Referral history. Check the displayed referrer. A household invitation or a link clicked earlier is not equivalent to checking the relationship inside the account.
If you entered the wrong code, repeatedly opening your spouse’s link is not a fix. The help page permits changing the relationship only while unfunded and more than 30 days after the incorrect entry; it cannot be changed after the $25 base bonus is paid. Ask support about your exact history.
For standard qualification, the help page requires at least $100 from an external source within the applicable 30-day funding period. Moving money between Wealthsimple partners or between your own Wealthsimple accounts does not qualify. Read our Canadian eligibility and funding examples before transferring.
With an external bank account, check ownership too. Wealthsimple’s bank-linking rules exclude an account you do not own, including a family member’s account. For a shared external account, ask Wealthsimple which ownership documents and funding route it accepts. Never share banking passwords with a referral publisher.
Check dates on separate household promotions
An official page titled Referral & Householding Promotion describes invitation-only participation from September 14–28, 2026. Those registration dates have passed as of this review. Its extra referrer reward is not a current signup promise on this website.
Finding that page in search does not establish eligibility. Match an offer to your own invitation, participation dates and required actions. Existing participants should consult their applicable terms or support; new readers should check current offers shown in their account.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Does sharing an address automatically disqualify us?
The reviewed standard terms do not state a blanket same-address ban. Address alone does not confirm eligibility either. New-client history, funding, ownership and referral restrictions still apply.
Can my spouse and I refer each other?
No. The standard terms prohibit mutual cross-referrals. A qualifying referral in one direction does not allow the recipient to refer that same person back.
Will a household invitation apply my referral code?
Do not rely on the invitation as confirmation. Check Referral history inside Wealthsimple. Household membership and referral attribution serve different purposes.
Can I replace my spouse’s code with PGVORW for another bonus?
No extra bonus follows from switching codes. Keep your intended referrer’s relationship. The help page restricts changes, and a relationship cannot be changed after its base bonus is paid.
What should I ask support if our setup is unusual?
Explain each person’s prior registration, primary or secondary ownership, first-funding date and intended referrer. Ask which promotion applies before moving funds. Share account records only through official support channels.
What to do next
Identify who is referring whom and which person is the account’s primary owner. Confirm attribution and the applicable offer for each person before funding. Shared access or household membership should not be treated as an additional referral entitlement.
