The card name tells you whether you are borrowing
Wealthsimple’s Chequing spending card and its credit cards can both show a Visa logo. That logo identifies the payment network, not whether the transaction creates a debt. The Visa Platinum Prepaid card spends money already in the linked Chequing account. A Visa Infinite + or Visa Infinite Privilege credit card creates a credit balance that you must repay.
The official prepaid-card page says there is no separate credit application, credit check or income requirement for that card once you have Chequing. It does not build credit. Credit-card approval is a separate decision; opening Chequing or using a referral code does not guarantee approval.
Prepaid spending versus a credit account
| Question | Chequing prepaid card | 2% credit cards |
|---|---|---|
| Where does purchase money come from? | Your available linked Chequing balance | A credit account you repay |
| Current main product names | Visa Platinum Prepaid; some clients are still migrating from Mastercard | Visa Infinite + and Visa Infinite Privilege |
| Base purchase cash back | Do not assume the old 1% prepaid reward still applies | 2% on eligible net purchases |
| Credit application | No separate credit check for the prepaid card | Eligibility review; proceeding can involve a hard credit check |
| Card fee | No fee for the prepaid card itself | Normally $20/month; Quebec annual billing; waiver conditions apply |
| Best first check | Available balance, card network and merchant acceptance | Statement, due date, interest and your exact card terms |
A separate Visa Infinite 1% beta credit card also exists for selected invited clients. It is a credit product, not a renamed prepaid card. The official card-benefits comparison gives it a different benefit package: for example, no foreign-exchange fees can be a selectable benefit rather than an automatic inclusion. Read the exact card name in the app.
Why older Mastercard and 1% articles can mislead
Wealthsimple is moving prepaid clients from Mastercard to Visa in phases. Some customers therefore still see Mastercard while others see Visa Platinum. Follow your own app notice. The new network can affect merchant acceptance, saved card details and recurring payments even though you are still spending your own money.
The migration guide says the new Visa prepaid card is not accepted inside Costco Canada warehouses, while the old prepaid Mastercard was. Do not infer acceptance from “works like debit”: a merchant asking for Interac does not necessarily accept every prepaid Visa. Before relying on a single card for a trip or a large purchase, check the merchant’s accepted methods.
Old personal prepaid-card posts often discuss 1% cash back. Wealthsimple’s historical Mastercard reward guidance says the last day to earn that 1% reward was September 30, 2025. That historical change does not establish a current Visa prepaid reward rate: check the terms for the exact card in your app. Business-card rewards and the 1% credit beta are separate arrangements. A screenshot about one product does not establish a benefit on another.
A Premium badge is not enough to settle the credit-card fee
For the 2% credit products, first ask whether the fee is waived on your account. The current fee terms normally set a $20 monthly fee, with annual billing for Quebec and specific promotional waiver treatment. They describe two routes: qualifying individual net deposits/assets of $100,000, excluding business/corporate accounts, or qualifying individual direct deposits totalling $4,000 under the calendar-month and statement-date rules.
Transferring $4,000 between your own accounts is not automatically qualifying payroll. Nor does one partner’s qualifying direct deposit satisfy another partner’s requirement. Household Premium or Generation status alone does not establish this waiver. If you already had a household-based waiver before April 28, 2026, the application help page describes a transitional exception being honoured until further notice.
A fictional $1,000-spending month
At 2%, $1,000 in eligible net purchases produces $20 in cash back. If a $20 card fee applies that month, those two amounts offset before interest or any other cost. At $500 of eligible purchases the reward is $10; at $1,500 it is $30. This arithmetic is not a recommendation to increase spending to cover a fee. Your purchases, refunds and eligibility determine the actual reward.
Cash back, a referral reward and a statement payment are different
The cash-back instructions say rewards on eligible settled transactions can be manually redeemed in the app. Refunds reverse associated rewards. Do not assume that a pending purchase has already produced the final amount or that rewards automatically pay a statement. The account used to receive cash back and the action that pays your credit balance are separate choices.
The credit card is issued under licence by Wealthsimple Payments Inc., according to the legal disclosures. It is not a loan from this referral website. Our referral code relates to a separate client-referral program; it is not a credit-card approval code, a cash-back rate upgrade or a fee waiver.
A positive reward rate is easy to see, while interest is easier to overlook. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains that credit-card interest can apply when the balance is not repaid in full under the agreement, and cash advances do not have the same interest-free treatment as purchases. Compare the statement obligations before comparing rewards.
Check credit reporting and the application sequence
Wealthsimple’s October 2026 bureau-reporting guidance says credit-card account activity is reported to TransUnion monthly. The prepaid card does not become a credit-building product simply because it also uses Visa. Credit reporting can affect a score in either direction; no card guarantees an improvement.
- Identify the exact card: prepaid Visa, an older prepaid Mastercard, a 2% credit card or the invited 1% beta.
- For a credit product, open the current in-app application and read its eligibility table and credit-check consent. The help page distinguishes an initial soft check from a hard check if you proceed.
- Check your personal fee-waiver route before relying on a household status label.
- Review the cardholder agreement, payment arrangements, due dates and applicable interest. Wealthsimple currently requires Chequing to pay its credit-card balance.
- For a card issue, contact Wealthsimple inside the official app. Keep card numbers, security codes and statements away from referral publishers.
Use our planning tools to work through your own fee arithmetic. Treat benefits as the result of the card agreement, not the reason to borrow more or move investments you would otherwise keep elsewhere.
What to do next
Choose by payment method, costs and repayment responsibilities. Check the exact card offered in your app, especially if an older review mentions Mastercard or a 1% prepaid reward. Referral code PGVORW belongs to the separate eligible-new-client referral program; the referrer may receive a reward, and the code does not change your card agreement.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Is the Wealthsimple Chequing card a credit card?
No. The personal Chequing card is prepaid and spends money in its linked account. Current new prepaid cards use Visa Platinum, while some clients are still moving from Mastercard. Sharing a payment-network logo does not make prepaid spending a credit account.
Does the Chequing prepaid card still earn 1% cash back?
Do not rely on the old personal Mastercard offer: its official historical guidance says the 1% reward ended after September 30, 2025. For the current Visa prepaid card, check its own terms and in-app benefits. The invited 1% Visa Infinite credit beta and business prepaid rewards are separate products.
Will applying for a Wealthsimple credit card affect my credit score?
It may. Wealthsimple describes a soft check for initial qualification, followed by a hard check if you qualify and continue. The prepaid Chequing card does not require that separate credit check. Approval and any later score change are not guaranteed.
Can I use household Premium to avoid the credit-card fee?
Household status alone does not automatically qualify under the current waiver rules. Check qualifying individual assets or direct deposits and any transitional waiver already on your account. One partner’s payroll does not automatically satisfy the other partner’s waiver requirement.
Can credit-card cash back automatically pay my statement?
Do not assume it does. Wealthsimple’s cash-back instructions currently require manual redemption. You can redeem into an eligible account, while paying the statement is a separate action. Follow the payment and redemption options shown in your account and agreement.
