Core, Premium and Generation are client statuses
A TFSA, RRSP or Chequing account tells you what kind of account you have. Core, Premium and Generation describe the benefits attached to your Wealthsimple client status. You can hold several account types and still have one client status. Reaching Premium does not turn a TFSA into a different registered account, change its contribution limit or guarantee that an investment will rise.
The official status overview places Premium at $100,000 and Generation at $500,000 in qualifying net deposits or total assets. Core has no status minimum. Borrowing through a portfolio line of credit does not count toward those amounts. Start with the status shown in your own profile, then check the particular product benefit you want.
The useful differences at a glance
| Feature | Core | Premium | Generation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Status threshold | No status minimum | $100,000 qualifying net deposits or assets | $500,000 qualifying net deposits or assets |
| Classic portfolio management fee | 0.5% annually | 0.4% annually | 0.4% down to 0.2%, depending on balance |
| Base Chequing interest | 1.25% annualized | 1.75% annualized | 2.25% annualized |
| USD-account subscription | $10/month after any applicable trial | Included; opt in | Included; opt in |
| Partner milestone rewards | None | First reward begins at $200,000 | Three rewards at the applicable milestones |
These are selected published features, not the full cost of every product. Chequing rates are variable. The management-fee row concerns Classic managed portfolios; separately priced products can follow different schedules. Investment-fund expenses and other applicable charges can be separate. An included USD-account subscription does not make converting Canadian dollars to U.S. dollars free. Read the current pricing and fee explanations for the service you actually use.
Net deposits and current value answer different questions
Net deposits track money added or transferred in, less relevant amounts leaving. Portfolio value also moves when investments change in price. The two figures can therefore differ substantially. Wealthsimple considers either qualifying measure; a market decline alone does not reduce the historical net-deposit figure. Withdrawals can.
A fictional investor with a market decline
Lea has $106,000 in qualifying net deposits and a portfolio now valued at $94,000. The larger figure is $106,000, so a lower market value alone would not put her below the Premium threshold. This example explains the measurement; it does not show Lea’s actual account or certify that every balance she holds counts.
A fictional investor whose holdings grow
Omar has $88,000 in qualifying net deposits and holdings worth $103,000. Current assets can provide the qualifying route even though deposits are lower. After a withdrawal, he should inspect both updated measures rather than relying on a screenshot taken before the withdrawal. Keep a separate record for any transfer or referral promotion: its funding and retention calculation may differ from client status.
Deposits can take up to 72 hours to appear in status progress, and automatic upgrades take at least one business day. A submitted transfer is not the same as a completed balance reflected in the tracker. If the figures remain unexplained, use official support with the dates and account types involved.
Compare the benefit with the money you actually use
Premium’s published benefits include its lower managed-investing fee, included USD accounts and priority service. These help different people in different ways. Someone who only buys Canadian securities may place little value on a USD subscription. Someone using managed investing should examine the management charge on the managed balance rather than apply that fee to every account.
For an arithmetic example, a 0.1 percentage-point annual fee difference on a constant $100,000 managed balance is $100 over a year before any other costs or balance changes. On a $10,000 managed balance the same difference is $10. This is a simple comparison, not a fee quote or a reason to move an unsuitable investment.
Generation’s Classic portfolio fee range begins at 0.4% around its entry threshold and reaches 0.2% at a much larger published balance. The words “as low as” matter. Reaching $500,000 does not automatically give every client the lowest advertised management rate. Ask which rate applies to your actual managed accounts before comparing providers.
A household tier does not settle every card question
The household feature can combine qualifying household assets for status while keeping the underlying accounts separate. Visibility settings are not permission to move a partner’s money. Joining a household also does not create a second contribution limit or replace the legal ownership of a joint account.
A frequent trap is assuming that a Premium household badge automatically makes a new credit card free. The credit card has its own individual fee-waiver test. The current credit-card fee terms use qualifying individual net deposits/assets of $100,000, excluding business and corporate accounts, or qualifying individual direct deposits of $4,000 under the stated statement-cycle rules. One household member’s payroll does not satisfy another member’s payroll requirement.
For example, two partners might qualify for household Premium while neither individually meets a particular card-waiver route. Before applying, read the card’s own fee notice. Existing arrangements can have transitional rules; this is a reason to check the account-specific notice, not to assume the same answer for every partner.
Check milestone rewards separately from Premium
Premium begins at $100,000, but the milestone-reward schedule starts its first reward at $200,000, with additional rewards at $300,000 and $400,000. The app may therefore correctly show Premium without an available partner reward. A plan label and a reward slot are different features.
Choose a benefit because you can use it. Before moving money to cross a threshold, list transfer costs, the investment options you need, registered-account restrictions and any ongoing promotion obligations. A benefit worth less than those costs should not drive the decision. Our planning tools can help organize calculations; the live account and official terms decide status.
What to do next
Start with the benefit you want, check its individual rules, and then compare the actual cost of moving or holding the assets. For an eligible new Wealthsimple client, referral code PGVORW is optional and subject to separate referral terms; it does not upgrade status or waive a credit-card fee. The referrer may receive a reward.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Do I need $100,000 in one Wealthsimple account to get Premium?
The status threshold can reflect qualifying balances across Wealthsimple accounts; it is not described as a requirement to put $100,000 in one TFSA or Chequing account. Check the status tracker and the official inclusion rules, especially for joint or household balances.
Can I lose Premium only because the market falls?
The status calculation considers qualifying net deposits as well as current assets. A market decline does not itself reduce net deposits, while withdrawals can. Inspect both figures and the current downgrade rules rather than assuming a permanent entitlement from an old balance.
Does Generation always mean a 0.2% Classic portfolio fee?
No. The published Generation range begins at 0.4% and reaches 0.2% at much higher balances. Your actual managed-investing rate depends on the applicable fee schedule. It is separate from investment-fund expenses and the pricing of other products.
Does Premium household status waive my credit-card fee?
Not automatically under the current rules. Credit-card waiver eligibility has individual asset or qualifying direct-deposit conditions. Wealthsimple says certain household-based waivers already in place before April 28, 2026 are being honoured until further notice; check your own notice.
Why am I Premium but unable to claim a milestone reward?
Premium starts at $100,000, while the first partner milestone reward starts at $200,000. Further reward slots are associated with $300,000 and $400,000. Eligible deposits may also need processing time before a new reward appears.
